Waterdestillatie: Dit is een proces waarin het materiaal direct in contact wordt gebracht met kokend water. Het wordt niet zo vaak toegepast aangezien het materiaal door de hoge temperatuur veel te lijden heeft.
Stoomdestillatie: Bij dit proces wordt het materiaal door middel van stoom onder grote druk gezet. Hierdoor komen de vluchtige delen vrij en dit wordt daarna weer afgekoeld. De verschillende stoffen gaan zich scheiden waardoor de olielaag op het geurwater (hydrolaat) blijft drijven.
Koude expressie: Dit wordt bijvoorbeeld gebruikt bij het destilleren van fruit. Het komt er in het kort op neer dat de oliën eruit worden geperst.
Solvent extractie: Hierbij wordt ethanol of hexaan gebruikt om oliën uit plantenmateriaal de onttrekken. Dit wordt gebruikt bij planten die te delicaat zijn voor stoomdestillatie. Hiermee worden fijnere geur oliën geproduceerd.
Enfleurage: Dit is een ouderwetse manier van geur onttrekken. Er worden ramen van glasplaten of doek met vet ingesmeerd. De bloemen worden op dit vet “geplakt” zodat de geur in het vet kan trekken. Die bloemen worden regelmatig vervangen, totdat het vet verzadigd is.
Etherische oliën zijn vaak duur en dat komt omdat de opbrengst van een destillatie vaak laag is in vergelijking met het hoge aantal materiaal wat je erin stopt. Er is bijvoorbeeld ongeveer duizend kilo aan jasmijn nodig om een liter etherische jasmijn olie te maken!
