Most know the
Magnolia
as the beautiful tree with tulip-shaped flowers in pink, white or purple but the flowers of this tree are also made into fragrance oil. Within the Magnolia group, there are several varieties. The species used to make fragrance oil from is Magnolia Grandiflora but like almost every other fragrance oil, Magnolia is available in both essential and synthetic varieties. Magnolia has a sweet, delicate fragrance. The fragrance is reminiscent of sweet fresh neroli, powdery violets and roses.
The fragrance oil is obtained by steam distillation. Magnolia flowers are pressurized by steam. This releases the volatile particles and this is then cooled again. The different substances start to separate, leaving the oil layer floating on the scented water (hydrolate). The essential oil is known for its regenerative effect on the skin. It will renew and even out your skin.
The scent of magnolia has an uplifting effect and especially when mixed with other fragrance notes, it will have a positive effect on your mood. Magnolia comes in several women’s and unisex fragrances. Some fragrances in which Magnolia is most evident are:
